Why Dads Need Doulas

Dads (or partners) play such an important part of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.  In the Bradley Method, dad is the main support person for mom.  Throughout the classes, partners are prepared to help mom every step of the way.  A good doula helps facilitate the birth process by supporting the couple. She does not, as some believe, replace a partner, but rather enhance their role.

So what are some reasons dads love doulas?

  • Reassurance.  Hiring a doula provides dad with peace of mind.  She has attended a number of births and is usually a mother herself.  When things come up in labor, she can assure partners what mom is going through is normal.  She can also give dad a pep talk if he’s feeling helpless or losing confidence.  Having a doula gives a sense of calm during the labor and birth.
  • Breaks.  Moms do better in labor when they have continuous support.  Partners might not be able to leave for lunch in the middle of labor.  But it’s vitally important that dad take care of himself too by staying hydrated, having a snack, getting rest, and being able to run to the bathroom when needed.  A doula will be able to fill in for mom’s partner and make sure mom is fully supported throughout labor, while dad’s meeting his own needs too.
  • Extra set of hands.  Along with providing partners breaks, she can also leave the room to get a much needed item like additional pillows or ice chips.  She can also take pictures  of the birth, leaving dad free to just enjoy watching his child be born.
  • Advocate.  Doulas can help dad in supporting mom’s birth wishes.  She will never make a medical decision for you, but a doula can help facilitate discussions when complications or interventions arise.  She can assist with questions to ask the healthcare provider, and in collecting information for you to make an informed decision.
  • Guidance.  A doula has many tips and tricks in her bag.  She can quietly and quickly assist dad in comforting and supporting mom in the best way.  After the birth, mom will remember what an amazing job dad did in supporting her, and how he knew what she needed in every moment.

Remember, doulas can also help after the birth, especially when dad returns to work!
